South Jeolla (Cholla) Province Travel Information
Located in Korea's southwest area, the province is bordered by high mountains to the northeast,
the Yellow Sea to the west, and the South Sea to the south. The shallow sea contains close to
2,000 islands off the west and south coasts, most of them uninhabited. The land is fertile and
warm with a high ratio of farmable land, making agriculture one of the major industries here
(about 40 percent of the population remains involved in agriculture or fishing). The annual
Food Festival in Suncheon spotlights some of the best food in Korea. Throughout history, the
region has remained comparatively untouched by the ravages of invading armies, making the people
more conservative and indifferent to change than people in other regions.
