Gwangju (Kwangju) City Gwangju has a long tradition of loyalty and justice and political conscience. Many local residents have given their lives to the defense of their country, whether from foreign invasion or internal upheaval. Many of the nation's democratic movements had their roots in the area, including the March 1 Independence Movement (1919) and the May 18 Democratic Uprising (1980). The region is also famous for its abundance of agricultural and marine products. The city holds an annual Kimchi Festival that draws visitors from all over the country.
