DMZ- the Demilitarized Zone
(Return to the Panmunjeom main page.)

The Military Demarcation Line (DMZ) was established according to the Armistice Agreement that brought a truce
to the Korean War. The DMZ runs along the present armistice line. The Demarcation Line winds 248 km (155 miles)
across the Korea Peninsula from the Yeseong River and Kyodongdo of the Han River in the west, to Muyngho-ri in
Kosung-gun in the east. It runs through Panmunjeom, Cheolwon, and Gumhwa.

The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) stretches 2 km north and south of the Armistice Line, covering over a vast region
of about 64 million sq. ft. Around one million armed soldiers of North and South Korea face each other along
the Military Demarcation Line. Several
tours include the west
frontline in the suburbs of Seoul, construction site connecting the Gyeongui train line (the former main train
artery of Korea), Panmunjeom (the Joint Security Area), and views of Gaeseong-city and Songak mountain.
