Although Pusan is known for its sea port, Pusan is extremely mountainous. The Kumjeong-san fortress walls are over 600 meters above sea level.

Chungcheong (North) Province    [top of page]
Songni-san National Park and Worak-san National Park are the most famous hiking areas in North Ch'ungch'ong Province. It also contains the northwestern part of Sobaek-san National Park.

Just outside of Taejon is Kyeryong-san National Park, South Ch'ungch'ong Province's most famous hiking area.

Daegu City    [top of page]
The most notable hiking areas of Daegu are Ap-san to the south and Palgong-san to the north. The recent absorption of Talseong-gun into Taegu city added many routes to the southwest, most notably Pisul-san. The Dowon trails offer short trips through the foothills or access to the higher Talseong trails of Ap-san.

Kangwon Province contains Korea's most famous national parks. Seorak-san, Odae-san, Chiak-san, and T'aebaek-san National Parks draw millions of visitors every year.

As Kyonggi Province completely surrounds Seoul, many Seolites like to go mountain climbing on the many trails in this area. Pukhan-san, Surak-san, and Gwanak-san have trails which start in Seoul and extend into Kyonggi Province. Namhan-san is another popular area, with Namhan-san Fortress along the highest peak.

Gyeongsang (North) Province    [top of page]
North Kyongsan Province contains Kyongju National Park, Juwhang-san National Park, and the southern part of Sobaek-san National Park. Additionally, P'algong-san, Kumo-san, and Ch'eongnyang-san Provincial Parks keep hikers happy. Ulleung Island is also considered a part of North Kyongsan Province, and several trails lead to Seonginbong, the island's highest peak.

Kaya-san National Park and the eastern region of Chiri-san National Park are contained in South Kyongsang Province. It also contains Gachi-san Provincial Park.

Halla-san National Park has 5 well-marked trails to Paengnoktam Crater at the top of South Korea's highest peak (1950 m).

In addition to containing the northwestern edge of Chiri-san National Park, North Cholla Province also has Naejang-san National Park and Deokyu-san National Park (where Muju Ski Resort is located).

Mudeung-san Provincial Park offers easy getaways for the people of Kwangju. Other hiking areas include Chogye-san Provincial Park, Turyun-san Provincial Park, Wolch'ul-san National Park, and the southwestern edge of Chiri-san National Park.

Within the city limits, Nam-san is about the only major hill worth climbing. However, many routes which extend into the surrounding Kyonggi Province begin within the city limits, especially for Bukhan-san, Surak-san, and Gwanak-san.
