Life in Korea rating: 3 Average member rating: N/A (0 ratings)
QueenSuro004.jpg The queen of King Suro (r.42-199), whose name was Heo Hwang-ok, originally came from the Ayuta state of India. It is believed that she was a 16 year-old princess when she arrived in the Gaya Kingdom (42-532). She married King Suro-wang and died in 189. Her tomb (designated Historic Site #74) has a 5-meter high earthen mound. It was repaired in 1641, the 19th year of the reign of King Injo (r.1623-1649) of the Joseon Kindom (1392-1910). Sungbojase, a building used to prepare memorial services, is also located on the grounds. One of their sons took on the queen's family name by the order of his father and became the forefather of Heo family.

QueenSuro007.jpg Pisa-seoktop Pisa Stone Pagoda
This stone pagoda (designated Property Material #262) is said to have been brought by Prinecess Heo Hwang-ok from India's Ayuta stat in 48 A.D. when she sailed to Korean to become the queen of Kim Suro. The stones with exotic engravings and red patterns are believed to have also originated from India. The pagoda is also called Chimpungtap (Wind Calming Pagoda) because it is reputed to have a mysterious power to calm the stormy sea. It first stood in Hogye-sa Temple in Gimhae, but Chong Hyon-sok, magistrate of Kimhae, moved it to this compound after the temple was closed in 1873. It was brought to this location in May 1993 for better preservation in a pavillion built to shelter it.
