Many tombs of various sizes and styles overlook a plain formed by the Hwang River, a tributary of the Nakdong
River. As representative relics of the late Gaya period, this cemetery is thought to have been exclusively for
Gaya leaders. It also may have been the Dara country mentioned in Seoki, an ancient Japanese chronicle.
Over 100 bodies were excavated in the area, along with 2,500 relics. Large and small tombs are scattered about
the area. Of particular interest are 18 unique tombs having large mounds with vertical entrances and stone
chambers and small mounds with either wooden coffins or stone or wooden chambers. Designated Historic Site #326, Okjeon means "field of beads." The area was once a major center of power for Gaya. Location: Seongsan-ri, Sangjaek-myeon | |
