Eoleum-gol means 'Ice Valley' and has designated Natural Preservation Area
#224.
Eoleum-gol covers about 3,000 pyeong (1 pyeong=3.3 sq. meters) along the northern
side of Cheonhwang-san at 700 meters above sea level. Ice begins to form during the hot summer days and melts
down at the end of August. Many tourists come to experience the coolness during June and July. They also can
admire the beautiful valley scenery filled with rocks. Houses and restaurants around the valley have installed
pipelines all the way to the streams to draw water for cold-storage purposes.

According to the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, the foot of the mountain is covered with
stony slopes of Hwasan-am, broken down by weathering. Hwasan-am slopes have a low density and
numerous pores, enabling air to pass through without much resistance. During winter, while the temperature
drops below zero, the gravel along the slopes preserve their warmth from the summer and autumn and stay above
freezing. The rising warm air pushes cool air layers down to the lower parts of cliffs. The gravel warms the
cool air which then rises through the stony slopes. The temperature of stony slopes gradually drops from its
lower to higher parts.

By the end of winter, the temperature of slopes is about the same as outside air. During the early summer,
the opposite effect happens: the air inside the slopes grows cooler and outside air gets warmer. Thus the
air with a higher density in the slopes flows out and the warmer outside air flows into the higher layer.
This causes cool air to blow out all over Eoleum-gol. By the early autumn,
no more cool is available because the slopes have completely warmed with incoming air.
Volcanic rocks, vulnerable to temperature changes, form porous Chukyokjo and store coldness in winter
and warmth in summer, emitting cold air in summer and warm air in winter. According to people nearby, when
it rains in summer, fog forms over stony slopes, meaning the temperature of the stony slopes is much lower
than the surrounding air.
