Seoul Plaza re-opened on May 1, 2004, as the newly renovated place around the fountain area in front of Seoul City Hall. The fountain creates various water columns according to the lighting since the water tank is underground. On the surface, it looks as if water rises from the water's surface. The heights and directions of the water colums can be controlled. Also, so that the beautiful night scenery can be viewed along with the surrounding landscape, 48 lights were installed around the grass square.

Large-scale cultural events are often held on the grass square. At the same time with the re-opening, a 9-day "Hi, Seoul Festival' was held. Various cultural events and festivals will be held throughout the year, including "Day Time Concerts" (Tuesdays, Thursdays), weekend programs for children and youths, Deoksugung Royal Guards Changing Ceremony, Square Art Festival (September), Seoul Drum Festival, and Seoul Performing Art Festival (October). See the Life in Korea Events Calendar for details.
