Bangbae-dong Cafe Street began in the mid 1980s, before the nearby
Bangbae subway station made it even more popular. It reached the peak of its popularity in early
1990s and was the most popular place for those who drove themselves. The area became popular among
the so-called "my-car" people before the "orange people" name was created.
This area was the first place to import self-parking machines.

This was an area that people could use as shortcut when traffic was busy, as well as a rest place
for drivers to take a break since it was a quiet residential area. For that reason, many cafes were
built to attract these driving people. The flourishing cafe street became less popular after the
subway turned to a major tool of mass transportation. Heavy traffic around this area also keeps many
drivers away from this area, so many of the cafes have changed into various shops and restaurants.
