Dongdaemun Market has long been known as a great place to find
bargain prices when the wholesalers are open late at night (the area is open from 10:30 a.m. to
5:00 a.m.). Food stalls and tents line the sidewalks around Dongdaemun Market to cater to the hungry
buyers and sellers. Many also make frequent deliveries inside the myriad of shops to deliver food to
the shop owners. These days, however, the focus is on the younger crowd that has begun coming to
the area.

Shopping still plays a major part of the scene, with many shops in the newer areas open until late at
night with pop music blaring everywhere. The focus has shifted from wholesale clothing and housing
goods to trendy clothes, handbags, shoes, female accessories, and music. Many youths also head here
just to walk around with their friends, go on a date, or enjoy a number of different entertainment
events put on by the local merchants to attract even more shoppers.

Food stalls and tents offer snacks and ice cream that people can eat while walking around. Many more
sell beer and soju to people who want to sit down and hang out when they get tired of walking. Poeple
can sit and watch the other people who come to walk around looking at other people. In addition, food
courts offer a wide selection of different food types and are located on the top floors, and sometimes
in the basements, of the major shopping buildings.
