Gangnam Station (subway) forms the junction of the green (#2) and blue (#4) lines, making it very
convenient to get to from almost any place in Seoul. "Gangnam" means south of the river,
and represents the newer parts of Seoul as the city has gradually expanded outward. The stores and
arcades in the area tend to be newer, wider, and cleaner than similar places north of the river, and
attract a younger crowd. Many stores, restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops line the streets. Sellers
of jewelry, snacks, cosmetics, cell phones, and other trinkets line the sidewalk, leaving little room
for walking.

A huge underground arcade and food court spreads out from the subway station allowing a shopping
experience without being exposed to the elements. Although these stores close before the subways stop
running (most by 11:00 p.m.), the sidewalk hawkers along the streets stay up much longer. Although
many of the above-ground stores have rather high prices, the underground arcade shops offer many
bargains, especially for clothes, cosmetics, and CDs.
