Hongik University has one of the most famous art departments in Korea. It follows that the coffee shops and restaurants near the university should also be artsy. The area has a Western atmosphere, without being an American ghetto like Itaewon. Many new music types get their first playings in Korea in these local clubs. Many of the restaurants and clubs have original artwork inside by college artists.

Night Life
The Hongdae area is one of the most popular night life spots for Koreans and foreigners. The area has a thriving underground music, with many clubs showcasing live bands on weekends. Like any other college area in Korea, there are also many pool halls, noraebangs, and movie rooms.

Food and Drink:

The area is filled with various types of Korean restaurants, as well as a few Western ones. At nights, dozens of pochang machas come out and cater to the students. The area also has many beer hofs, soju bars, and dongdongju chips. Some Western style bars also serve a limited menu of mixed drinks.
