This is shrine (designated Busan Tangible Cultural Property #7) is dedicated to the patriotic fighters
who died while resisting the Japanese aggressors in the Busan area during the Japanese invasions of 1592-98.
Unprepared Korean defenders, joined by many volunteers, fought and died heroically in battles against
numerically superior Japanese troops armed with revolutionary matchlock guns during the invasion launched
by Hideyoshi Toyotomi after he unified the feudal domains of Japan.

In 1605, during the reign of King Seonjo, Songgongsa (Shrine) was built in memory of Song Sang-hyeon,
where another noted fighter, Cheong Pal, was also enshrined two years later. The shrine was renamed
Chungnyeolsa in 1652 and relocated to where it stands now, in the compound with
a lecture hall and dormitories, making it a shrine-school. Named Allak-Seowon, the compound was
designed to teach later generations about the loyalty of the fallen patriots.

In 1709, an auxiliary shrine was built at the original site of Songgongsa in memory of Yangsan
Magistrate Jo Yeong-gyu and many others who perished together with Song Sang-hyeon and
Cheong Pal. In 1736, those to whom the auxiliary shrine was dedicated, along with Tadaejin Commander
Yun Heung-shin, were also enshrined at Chungnyeolsa. A tablet hall was
also built outside the east gate in memory of Keumseom and Aehyang, the mistresses of
Song Sang-hyeon and Cheong Pal who immolated themselves upon the death of their men.
Memorial rites are held every May 25.

Main Shrine
This main shrine was dedicated to the patriotic fighters who perished resisting Japanese aggressors during
the 1592 invasion. Twenty-two officers and soldiers died in Busan and four unknown fighters and sixty-one
volunteer fighters who died in Dongnae, Busanjin, Tadaejin, and other neighboring areas are enshrined
here.

Chungnyeol Tower
This tower memorializes the heroic deeds of Korean patriots during the Imjin Invasion by Japanese forces in
1592. Their determination to protect the country combined the resources of the people, government, and
military during a period of national crisis. This tower was established on June 27, 1978, in the center of
Anrak rotary and was moved to its present site in 1989.
Monument to 24 Dongnae

In the Dongnae area, 66 retainers raised volunteer armies to suppress the Japanese aggressors during the 7-year
long invasion. The Governor of Dongnae district, Lee Ahn-Nool, selected 24 of the most distinguished
retainers to be honored. The memorial tablets of these war dead were originally enshrined in Chungui-dang
(Hall of Fidelity), located near Allak Lecture Hall in Chungnyeolsa. Due to the
remodeling project of Chungnyeolsa, they were moved to the main shrine in 1987.
This monument was raised to remind visitors of their patriotic devotion to safeguard their country.
