Located along the upper reaches of the Namhan River (the major feeder of Chungju Lake), this resort town at the foot of Sobaek-san National Park is a reincarnation of the original town that was partially flooded from the completion of Chungju Dam in 1986. In addition to the Namhan River, Sobaek-san National Park, and numerous caves, the area has 8 wonders of historical and cultural significance. The town acts as a great base camp for exploring the local region.

Famous Sites
Danyang Palgyeong (8 Wonders of Danyang)- Eight different places around Danyang have been collectively named the "8 Wonders of Danyang." North of town are Dodam Sambong and Seokmun. To the south are Sain-am Rock, Haseon-am, Jungseon-am, and Sangseon-am. Southwest, along the Namhan River, are Gudam-bong and Oksun-bong.
Danyang Hot Springs- The only major hot springs in Korea with a large component of sulfur in the water, tourists come from all over the country to soak in the water to cure their ills and sicknesses.
Gosu Cave- One of Korea's most famous limestone caves, it gets a large number of tourists that can make seeing the cave a chore. Visitors view the 1,300 meter cave along an extensive combination of steel stairwells and catwalks.
Nodong Cave- Almost 1,000 meters in length, this is the most recently discovered cave in the region. Although the scenery is as spectacular as Gosu Cave, fewer tourists visit here, leaving it more unspoiled.
Cheondong Cave- Less famous that the other caves in the area, it is around 300 meters in length and went undiscovered until 1977. The usual steel stairs and scaffolding can be extremely narrow and low at times- bad news for big people!
Ondal Cave and Fortress- A fortress built near the cave was the central focus for a great love story between Pabo Ondal and Princess Pyonggang during the Three Kingdoms period (57BC - 668AD).
Guin-sa Temple- The headquarters of the Chonte sect of Korean Buddhism, the temple lies about 21 km northeast of town. The order was only re-established in 1945, so the temple is very modern, although built in traditional fashion.
Huibang-sa Temple- Located next to Huibang waterfall, this temple lies along one of the main hiking trails of Sobaek-san National Park.
River Cruises- To take a scenic tour of the river, you can hire a small power boat (up to 6 passengers) or take a scheduled open-deck cruise. Tours range from less than 10 minutes to over 2 hours. Cruises can be suspended if the river level is too low.

Famous Products
Cement- Because of the abundance of lime in the area, Danyang cement is one of the area's biggest products.
Garlic- The region is also famous for the garlic grown here- they even have a Miss Garlic beauty contest every year.
