Chungnyeolsa Shrine
This structure was built in 1697, during the reign of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty. Since designated
Historic Site #189, it served as a shrine to General Im Gyeongeop
(1594-1646), who received the Court's highest title for putting down Yi Kwal's rebellion in 1624.
He was born at the foot of the nearby Daerim-san. In his early years, Im excelled in the martial arts and
in 1618 he passed the state military examination. He served as a local magistrate and in a number of military
positions.

During the invasions by the Ching Chinese in 1627 and 1636, he built the fortress walls on
Baekma-san and Euiju and successfully resisted the aggressors. Despite his achievements, however, the general
died a dishonorable death because of his involvement in the 1644 rebellion by Shim Gi-won. To honor
General Im, King Yeongjo had the shrine named Chungnyeol-sa in 1727 and began
sending government officials to conduct memorial services in Im Gyeongeop's
honor every spring and fall.

In 1791, King Jongjo composed a writing to be inscribed on a monument for this shrine. The shrine was
declared a 'sacred place' in 1978. The shrine contains the Chungnyeolsa monument, the Chungnyeolsawonji,
and General Im's personal effects. About 3.5 km from Chungnyeol-sa Shrine is
the grave site of General Im Gyeongeop, which was designated
North Chungcheong Province Monument #67.
