(front gate of wood garden at 500 m away) Resting Place of Wood Bath in Plant Garden Jeonju wood land of the Korea Road Corporation is located next to the Jeonju toll gate of Honam Highway and is not familiar to general public. However, it is widely known to botanists or university students. The Korea Road Coporation recommends it as the place to go in April and opens the site throughout the year. No admission fee is required. Jeonju wood land started with the paving of graveyards in 60,000 pyeong in 1974 and has been mainly involved in cultivating the grass and woods for landscape and providing them to the section of road construction. It was changed to wood land and nature study site in 1983 and welcomes visits by the general public. Its total area is about 64,000 pyeong, consisting of wood and grass in 52,000 pyeong, and a nature study site in 12,000 pyeong. It possesses 1,021 kinds of woods and 990 kinds of woods, totaling to 2,011 species in 162 classes. Wood land consists of 9 special wood lands such as a medical plant garden, a rock garden, a southern plant garden, a bamboo garden, a weed garden, the rose of Sharon garden, a rose garden, a dye garden and general botanical gardens. In the medical plant garden, 420 kinds of medical plants grow, which are prevalent throughout the country, and this medical plant garden is used as a practice site for medical students and oriental medical students. The weed plant garden is the only one in the country, and 260 kinds of weeds grow in the rice fields and dry fields, orchard and the forest. The southern plants garden collects and displays the plants which grow in the southern beaches and islands, and the wood wall in the north of 15 m in width prevents the north wind in the winter and helps the winterization of woods here. Also, in the rock garden, 162 kinds of plants grow which originally grow in the high mountains and around rock. In the dye garden, 60 kinds of plants grow which can be used as natural dye. The bamboo garden has 52 kinds of bamboo, the rose of Sharon garden has 65 kinds of rose of Sharons including "Youngkwang", "Parangsae", and "Nanpa". It also possesses 33 kinds of rare plants, including Wasabia koreana Nakai, Abeliophyllum distichum Nakai, Jeffersonia dubia Benth, Campanula takesimana, Tricyrtis dilatata Nakai, Abies koreana and Lycoris koreana Nakai, which are designated as extinct and endangered plants by the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Forestry. Jeonju plans to change the nature study site to an ecosystem park, and to expand the area to 36,000 pyeong. It also plans to obtain more kinds of plants including aquatic plants and plants growing around rivers, by creating a swamp and a pond. Various convenience facilities are available including parking lot, grass garden, restroom and vending machines. It is highly recommended to stop by while you are on the highway.
