Located on the southern part of Seoul, the 629-meter high peak actually marks the boundary between the three
cities of Seoul, Anyang, and Gwacheon. The total area of the mountain is 20,467 square kilometers. Near the
peak is a military radar observatory, Wongak-sa, and Yeonju-am (the latter two built by King Taejo of the
Joseon Dynasty when he moved the dynasty's capital to Seoul). Gwanak-san is one
of the Gyeonggi 5 ak (peaks) that also includes Songak-san of Gaeseong, Gamak-san of Paju, Unak-san
of Pocheon, and Hwaak-san of Gapyeong.

In addition to hiking information offices, located at the entrance to the hiking trails, there is a hillside
cottage, shelter, public restrooms, mineral springs, and various other facilities. Because of its clear water
and dense woods, as well as its easy accessibility, Gwanak-san is a very popular
hiking spot. Open throughout the year, the Gwacheon side has 2 major trails to the top: 1 from Jungang-dong
and one from Galhyeon-dong (near the Government Complex). For the less physically inclined, a cable car runs
near the Jungang-dong trail.
