Ccju118.jpg Of the many lava caves in Jeju Island, Kimnyeong-gul and Manjang-gul (collectively designated Natural Monument #98) are the most famous. They are also the largest known lava tubes in the world. Originally one long tunnel, the two caves were formed when parts of the tunnel caved in. Kimnyeong-gul (also known as Paem-gul or "snake cave") was the first cave to be designated as a Natural Monument in Korea. The S-shaped cave has two levels and consists of three tunnels. The first one is about 50 meters long, while the the second is 150 meters long on the lower level and 50 meters long one the upper level. The third tunnel is over 350 meters long. Because of the thick layer of shell sand that covers the cave, calcareous drip stones have formed inside, an unusual phenomenon in lava caves.

Manjang-gul also two levels. Much larger than Kimnyeong-gul, it stretches over 8 km, with widths reaching 5.15 meters and heights up to 10 meters. The temperature inside the tube ranges between 11-21 degrees (Celsius) year-round. It contains many spectacular lava columns and other formations that resemble common objects:
