picture courtesy of South-Chungcheong Province Government Gyeryong-san is so named because its shape resembles the look of a hen and a dragon (kye means hen, ryong means dragon). It has other nicknames such as Kyeram-san, Ong-san, and Joongak-san. Formed between the Charyung and Noryung mountains chains, it was designated as a spiritual mountain, the West Great Mountain out of the Five Great Mountains from the Shilla Dynasty. The park covers someof the border between Kongju and Nonsan, with part of the eastern area inside Daejeon.

The park has several short but good hiking trails, many beautiful waterfalls, rocky outcroppings, ancient pagodas, and relics dating from the Paekche era. Kap-sa is the representative temple of the mountain, lying along the western edge of the park. Other beautiful and quiet temples include Tonghak-sa and Shinwon-sa.

Kap-sa
This temple lying on the west side of Gyeryong-san was founded by Ahdoh Wasang in 420. Reconstructed by the great monk Heymung Taesa in 556, it later became one of ten major training centers for Hwaumjong (a Buddhist sect) under the great monk Euisang Taesa.

Tonghak-sa
This temple lying on the east side of Gyeryong-san was started by Sangwon Josa in 724 and founded by Hweeuih Aasang. It was later designated as the shrine temple of King Taejo of the Koryo Dynasty.

Shinwon-sa
This temple on the southwest side of Gyeryong-san was founded by Boduk Sunsa. It was later modified several times and reconstructed by Joyun Hwasang in 1876.
