Mobile Phones

Subscription | Rental | Leaving a Recorded Message

mobile Very few Koreans do not have mobile phones. The country has two major types of mobile phone services: cellular and PCS. Providers have their own prefix for numbers. Monthly subscription and per-call fees vary between providers, but PCS service is generally cheaper.

Subscribers pay for all calls that they make. Calls made to mobile phones are charged more than calls made to land line phones. However, the fee to call a mobile phone is a flat time-based charge and does not depend on the distance involved.

Subscription

mobile phone agency Foreign residents must provide their Certificate of Alien Registration, passport, and a credit card when applying for service.

[010 combined number system for mobile phones]

A new system was introduced in 2004 for mobile phone service. Mobile phone subscribers receive a number with a '010' prefix when they signup for new mobile phone service or change their existing number. Previously, each company provided their own prefix (such as 011, 016, 017, 018, 019). The new system seeks to avoid branding certain numbers and to efficiently control mobile numbers at the government level, as well as seeking the convenience of users by allowing the dialing of mobile phone numbers without having to enter the 010 prefix.

Therefore, all new subscribers have received 010 numbers from 2004.

Leaving a Recorded Message or Phone Number

Mobile phone services allow callers to leave a recorded message or key in their phone number if no one answers the phone. All services have the same options (1 to leave a message, 2 to enter your number), although some services have slightly different procedures. In general, after the recorded message, press 1, pause for a beep, leave your message, press the # button, then hang-up. To leave a phone number, press 2 after the recorded message, enter your phone number, press the # button, then hang-up.
  • (011) - press the * button instead of #. (After leaving a message, you can press 1 immediately after the *, enter your phone number, then press * again.)
  • (017) - when leaving your phone number, just hang-up instead of pushing the # button first.
