Lake Soyang

A lake resulting from construction of Soyang Dam, the largest rock filled dam (a dam made of mud, sandy soil and rock) in Asia This lake is called an "inland sea", corresponding to its majestic appearance. As there are Cheongpyeongsa Temple built in the age of Goryeo Kingdom, Mt. Obongsan that is famous for splendid rocks, and other fantastic scenery around the lake, this place is highlighted for a one-day trip. In addition, you can enjoy fishing trout, Israel carp and especially smelt in the early winter. Many kinds of other fish are attracting anglers to visit there all the year round, too, and Chugok Mineral Water Spring is boasting of its fresh taste. This will add up your pleasure of touring Lake Soyang.

Pleasure boats run at the Soyang Dam wharf as well as passenger ships bound for Yanggu and Cheongpyeongsa Temple, and they present a picturesque scenes in harmony with natural beauty surrounding it. Facilities are well equipped around the top of the dam such as restaurants, coffee shops, souvenir shops, and resting places. You'd better take free shuttles, for no entering of cars is permitted on weekends owing to limited parking lot.

Since it was constructed in Oct. 1973, its sluices have been opened only 7 times. Whenever it happened, traffic was paralyzed by many tourists to enjoy seeing the magnificent spectacle.
